How to participate

Did you get motivated to measure your personal daily light exposure and assess the related subjective wellbeing? Don't wait any further and get started:

1. Download the Daylight App here.

2. Fill-in your anonymous profile on the Daylight App. Please refer to the table below for study-references.

3. Build your own low-cost spectrometer, following the instructions here.

4. Calibrate your Daylight App for use with your personal spectrometer. For more details, see here.

5. You are ready to make the first measurement! Find instructions here.

Currently, Daylight App is only available for Android and can exclusively be obtained from this website:

For installation: Please note, you will need to accept that an application from an unknown distributor can be installed.

Required permissions: Daylight App will ask you to grant the following permissions:
Camera – In order to take a photo of the spectrum, access to your camera is essential.
Write External Storage – In order to save your measurements, writing permission is necessary.
Current Location – We are interested in studying sunlight exposure in different areas of the world.
Internet – Internet connection is requried for comparing your measurement data with the average of all other participants, and for sharing your data with us for research purposes.


Study references

In order to further refine data analysis, we kindly ask you to check the different categories and sign-up for those you identify with by adding the study-reference into your profile on the Daylight App. Please note, in case you want to list more than one study-reference, use a semicolon for separation.

Study-reference Description
DEPR-med Depression: You have been diagnosed with depression by a psychiatrist, AND you take antidepressive medication since at least 2 weeks.
DEPR-light Depression: You have been diagnosed with depression by a psychiatrist, AND your receive light therapy since at least 2 weeks.
DEPR-not Depression: You have been diagnosed with depression by a psychiatrist, AND you do not take any medication nor light therapy.
MYOP Pathologic Myopia: You have been diagnosed with pathologic myopia by an ophthalmologist before age 10. Pathologic myopia is defined as high myopia (-6.00 dioptres or more, axial length of 26.5mm or more) IN COMBINATION WITH any posterior myopia-specific pathology from axial elongation.
CNTR-mental Mental Health: You do not suffer and never have suffered from any mental illness.
CNTR-visual Visual Health: You do not suffer and never have suffered from a refractive error of more than +/-0.5 diopters.
