Giovanni
Sommaruga’s research interests include the foundations of mathematics
(foundational theories, classical and constructive mathematics, a comparative
approach), philosophical topics in theoretical computer science, constructivism
in philosophy of logic and mathematics, and Paul Bernays’ philosophy of logic
and mathematics.
G. Sommaruga
was Senior Scientist in philosophy of formal sciences (math, logic, TCS) at
D-MATH and D-GESS of ETH Zurich from 2008 to 2021 (retired), and he is Titular
Professor in Logic at Fribourg University since 2010.
G. Sommaruga
received his Ph.D. in philosophy (specialization in logic) and his Postdoctoral
degree (habilitation) both from Fribourg University. Between 1982 and 1995, he
was visiting scholar at Stanford University, Siena University, Oxford
University (Wolfson College), Leiden University and Stockholm University. And
from 1996 to 2002, he held a position as Ass. prof. in logic and philosophy of
science at Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg.
In 2012, G.
Sommaruga established the new honorary lecture series Paul Bernays Lectures at
ETH Zurich, and until 2021, he served as managing secretary of this lecture
series. He still is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Paul Bernays
Lectures. From 1996 to 2023, he was first Vice-President, and later President
of the Swiss Society for Logic and Philosophy of Science (SSLPS). From 2011 to
2023, he also chaired the Jury of the SSLPS’ Paul Bernays Award.
