Dr. Urs Aeberhard
I received my diploma (master degree) in theoretical physics from the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in 2004, and my PhD in
condensed matter theory in 2008 from the same institution, for a thesis
on a quantum-kinetic theory of quantum well solar cells, performed in
the Condensed Matter Theory Group at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the
Institute of Theoretical Physics at ETHZ under the supervision of Dr. Rudolf Morf (PSI) and Prof. Manfred Sigrist (ETHZ). From 2009-2012, I was a
postdoctoral researcher with Prof. Uwe Rau at the Institute of Photovoltaics at
Forschungszentrum Jülich, working on the theoretical description of
silicon nanostructure based high-efficiency solar cell devices. In 2013, I was a visiting research scholar at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden Colorado, USA, working in the Solid State Theory group headed by Dr. Suhuai Wei.
From 2013-2018, I did reseach as a tenured staff scientist at IEK-5 Photovoltaik, founding member and head of the research group on Multiscale Simulation as part of the department Analytics & Simulation headed by Prof. Thomas Kirchartz.
In October 2018, I joined the Winterthur based company Fluxim as a senior R&D Scientist to work on the simulation of solar cells, light emitting diodes and displays based on organic and emerging materials (e.g., metal halide perovskites, quantum dots, etc). Since September 2019, I am also a Guest Lecturer at ETHZ, teaching a course on the simulation of photovoltaic devices (Master level).
My research interests include:
My research interests include:
- Charge carrier generation, recombination and transport in quantum wells, wires and dots
- Quantum transport formalisms (especially NEGF) and applications in opto-electronics
- Many-body quantum theory of photoexcited semiconductor nanostructures
- Advanced concepts in photovoltaics: hot-carrier cells, multi-junction solar cell architectures, multi-exciton generation, up-/down-conversion, etc.
- Multiscale modelling of nanostructure-based solar cell devices
